Forced cloud

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005704

A cloud formation that results directly from mechanical lifting of air, rather than from buoyant convection. This lifting can be caused by terrain, such as mountains, or by frontal systems where warmer air is forced to ascend over colder air. Examples include orographic clouds and frontal clouds, which are distinct from cumulus clouds formed by thermal updrafts.
