Thunderstorm electrification

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009655

The physical processes responsible for the generation and separation of electrical charges within a cumulonimbus cloud, ultimately leading to lightning. This phenomenon is primarily attributed to the non-inductive charging mechanism involving collisions between ice particles and graupel in the presence of supercooled water. Electrification is a prerequisite for lightning activity.
