Spray electrification
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009160
The process by which electric charges are generated and separated when water droplets or ice particles break apart due to mechanical forces, such as wind shear or collisions. This phenomenon is particularly relevant in the formation of lightning within thunderstorms, where the fragmentation of freezing raindrops or ice crystals contributes to charge separation. It also occurs when ocean waves break, producing charged aerosols.
