Cloud electrification
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004421
The process by which electric charges separate and accumulate within clouds, leading to the generation of strong electric fields and ultimately lightning. This phenomenon is primarily driven by collisions between ice crystals, graupel, and supercooled water droplets in convective clouds. Charge separation results in positive charges typically accumulating at the top of the cloud and negative charges in the middle and lower regions.
