Thunderstorm charge separation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009652
The process by which positive and negative electrical charges become spatially separated within a cumulonimbus cloud, leading to the generation of lightning. This separation is primarily driven by the interaction of ice particles and supercooled water droplets in strong vertical air currents. Graupel particles typically acquire a negative charge, while ice crystals become positively charged.
