Hydrometeor charge
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006341
The net electrical charge carried by a hydrometeor, which is any water or ice particle that has formed in the atmosphere. Charge separation within clouds occurs through collisions between different types of hydrometeors, such as graupel and ice crystals, in the presence of supercooled water. This process of non-inductive charging is a primary mechanism for thunderstorm electrification, leading to lightning.
