Induction
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006507
A cloud electrification process in which a falling hydrometeor, such as graupel, is polarized by the ambient vertical electric field and then exchanges charge with smaller particles during rebounding collisions. The charge transferred grows with the strength of the field, so the process strengthens a field that already exists. Laboratory and modelling studies treat it as secondary to the non-inductive mechanism, in which graupel and ice crystals collide in the presence of supercooled water.
