Induction charging mechanism
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006508
A process by which electric charge separation occurs within a cloud, particularly in thunderstorms, due to the interaction of ice crystals and graupel in the presence of an ambient electric field. When a larger, falling graupel particle collides with smaller, rising ice crystals, charge is transferred, leading to the electrification of the cloud. This mechanism is considered a primary contributor to lightning formation.
