Triboelectrification
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009786
The process of electric charge separation that occurs when two different materials come into contact and then separate, resulting in one material gaining electrons and the other losing them. In meteorology, this phenomenon is relevant to the charging of ice crystals and graupel particles within thunderstorms, contributing to lightning formation. It is a form of contact electrification.
