A stream or river that flows into a larger stream, river, or lake. In a broader sense within atmospheric science, it can metaphorically describe smaller atmospheric flows or moisture sources that contribute to a larger weather system or circulation pattern. The Amazon River has numerous tributaries that contribute to its vast discharge.
