Channel

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000447

  1. A natural or artificial open conduit that conveys water, typically referring to a river, stream, or gully. In atmospheric science, it can also refer to a specific frequency band used for remote sensing, such as a satellite channel for measuring infrared radiation. The morphology of river channels influences local microclimates and moisture transport.

  2. In hydrologic terms, also known as Watercourse; an open conduit either naturally or artificially created which periodically, or continuously contains moving water, or forms a connecting link between two bodies of water. River, creek, run, branch, anabranch, and tributary are some of the terms used to describe natural channels. Natural channels may be single or braided. Canal and floodway are some of the terms used to describe artificial channels.
