Drainage basin

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000762

  1. An area of land where all surface water converges to a single outlet, such as a river, lake, or ocean. Precipitation falling within this area flows through a network of streams and rivers, eventually exiting at the basin's mouth. The size and characteristics of a drainage basin influence the hydrology and water resources of a region, with larger basins often supporting more extensive river systems.

  2. In hydrologic terms, a part of the surface of the earth that is occupied by a drainage system, which consists of a surface stream or a body of impounded
surface water together with all tributary surface streams and bodies of impounded surface water.
