Drainage area

The total land area from which surface runoff and subsurface flow converge to a common outlet, such as a river, lake, or ocean. This area is delineated by topographic divides. The size of a drainage area influences the volume of water flowing through its outlet.
In hydrologic terms, an area having a common outlet for its surface runoff (also see Watershed and Catchment Area).
