Noninductive charging mechanism
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007578
A process by which electric charge separation occurs within a cloud without the need for an external electric field. This mechanism is thought to be responsible for the initial electrification of thunderstorms. It involves the transfer of charge during collisions between ice crystals and graupel particles in the presence of supercooled water.
