Thunderstorm charge
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009651
The electrical charge accumulated within a thunderstorm cloud, primarily due to collisions between ice crystals and graupel particles in the presence of strong updrafts. This charge separation leads to the buildup of positive and negative regions within the cloud. The potential difference between these regions eventually results in a lightning discharge.
