Rate of accretion

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008411

The speed at which a larger hydrometeor, such as a hailstone or graupel particle, grows by collecting smaller supercooled water droplets or ice crystals as it falls through a cloud. This process is a primary mechanism for precipitation growth in cold clouds. It is a key factor in determining the final size and type of precipitation reaching the ground.
