Dry growth
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005160
The accretion of ice crystals onto a supercooled object, such as an aircraft or a hailstones, when the ambient air temperature is well below freezing. In this process, the supercooled water droplets freeze instantly upon impact, forming a rime ice structure that is opaque and brittle. This contrasts with wet growth, where liquid water spreads before freezing.
