Schuman-Ludlam limit

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010739

A theoretical maximum height to which a cumulonimbus cloud can grow, determined by the balance between the cloud's buoyancy and the entrainment of drier, cooler air from its surroundings. This limit is reached when the cloud's updraft can no longer overcome the negative buoyancy imposed by entrainment and the decreasing temperature difference with the environment. It provides a conceptual framework for understanding thunderstorm intensity and anvil formation.
