Limit cycle

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006963

A stable, isolated periodic orbit in the phase space of a dynamical system. Trajectories starting near a limit cycle will approach it as time progresses, exhibiting sustained oscillations. In atmospheric science, limit cycles can describe recurring patterns in climate models or atmospheric phenomena, such as certain types of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) behavior.
