Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006147

A weather phenomenon characterized by the fall of ice pellets, known as hailstones, from cumulonimbus clouds. These storms form when strong updrafts carry water droplets high into the atmosphere, where they freeze and grow through accretion before falling to the ground. Hailstones can range in size from small peas to golf balls or larger.
