Granular snow
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006028
A type of coarse, grainy snow composed of large, distinct ice crystals that are loosely bonded together. It typically forms from the repeated melting and refreezing of a snowpack, a process known as melt-freeze metamorphism, which rounds the snow crystals into larger grains. This snow type is common in spring conditions and has a low water-holding capacity, contributing to rapid runoff during melt events.
