Rime ice
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002327
An opaque, granular ice deposit that forms when supercooled water droplets freeze rapidly upon impact with a surface. It is characterized by its milky white appearance and brittle texture, often forming in conditions of freezing fog or clouds. Rime ice is a common hazard for aircraft, as it can accumulate quickly on wings and control surfaces, disrupting airflow and increasing drag.
An opaque coating of tiny, white, granular ice particles caused by the rapid freezing of supercooled water droplets on impact with an object. See also clear ice.
