Ice formation on aircraft

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006417

The accumulation of ice on the external surfaces of an aircraft, occurring when supercooled water droplets in the atmosphere freeze upon impact. This phenomenon can severely degrade aerodynamic performance, increase weight, and interfere with control surfaces and instruments. Aircraft are equipped with de-icing and anti-icing systems to mitigate this hazard, which is classified into rime, clear, and mixed ice types.
