Aircraft icing

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003396

The formation and accumulation of ice on an aircraft's external surfaces, including wings, propellers, and engine inlets, when flying through specific atmospheric conditions. This occurs when supercooled water droplets freeze upon impact with the aircraft. Icing can severely degrade aerodynamic performance, increase drag, and reduce lift, necessitating de-icing or anti-icing measures.
