Anti-icing

A proactive treatment or system designed to prevent the formation and adhesion of ice on a surface. In aviation, this involves applying chemical fluids to an aircraft's wings and tail before takeoff in freezing conditions or activating onboard heating systems for engine inlets and flight instruments. Anti-icing differs from de-icing, which is the process of removing ice that has already formed.
