Ice accretion

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006397

The process by which ice accumulates on surfaces, particularly on aircraft, structures, or vegetation, when supercooled water droplets freeze upon impact. This phenomenon can significantly affect the aerodynamic performance of aircraft, increase structural loads, and disrupt power lines. Ice accretion can occur as rime ice, clear ice, or mixed ice, depending on atmospheric conditions.
