Sheet frost

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008835

A thin, uniform layer of ice crystals that forms on surfaces when water vapor in the air directly sublimates onto a cold surface whose temperature is below freezing. It appears as a smooth, white coating, distinct from hoar frost which has a more feathery appearance. This type of frost often forms on car windshields or pavement during clear, calm nights.
