Silver frost

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008879

A smooth, clear coating of ice on exposed surfaces, produced when supercooled rain or drizzle freezes on contact with objects at or below 0 degrees Celsius. It is another name for glaze, called silver thaw in North America, and it forms from liquid drops, whereas hoar frost forms by direct deposition of water vapor as ice crystals. A heavy coating can bring down tree branches and power lines.
