Supercooled rain
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009403
Precipitation that falls as liquid water droplets but has a temperature below 0 degrees Celsius. This occurs when rain forms in a warm layer aloft and then falls through a shallow layer of sub-freezing air near the surface. Upon striking objects on the ground, supercooled rain instantly freezes, forming a layer of glaze ice, also known as freezing rain.
