Supercooled large drops
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009402
Liquid water droplets in the atmosphere that have a diameter greater than 50 micrometers and remain unfrozen at temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius. These drops are particularly hazardous to aircraft as they can freeze instantly upon impact, forming clear ice that is difficult to detect and remove. Supercooled large drops (SLD) are often found in freezing rain and drizzle conditions.
