Radiation frost

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008298

Frost that forms on surfaces when the air temperature near the ground falls below freezing due to radiative cooling on clear, calm nights. Water vapor in the air then sublimates directly onto cold surfaces as ice crystals, even if the air temperature a few feet above the ground remains above freezing. This phenomenon is distinct from advection frost, which occurs with cold air masses.
