Radiation inversion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008299
An atmospheric temperature inversion that forms near the ground on clear, calm nights due to rapid radiative cooling of the Earth's surface. The ground cools faster than the air above it, leading to a layer of colder, denser air trapped beneath warmer air. This inversion often traps pollutants and can lead to the formation of radiation fog.
