Ground inversion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006088
An atmospheric condition where temperature increases with height immediately above the Earth's surface, rather than decreasing as is typical. This inversion forms due to radiative cooling of the ground on clear, calm nights, chilling the air directly above it. Ground inversions trap pollutants near the surface and can lead to the formation of ground fog.
