Nocturnal boundary layer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007558
A stable layer of air that forms near the Earth's surface after sunset, characterized by a temperature inversion where air temperature increases with height. This layer develops as the ground cools rapidly by radiative heat loss, chilling the air directly above it. Its depth can range from a few tens of meters to several hundred meters.
