Nocturnal jet
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001874
A low-level atmospheric jet stream that develops during the night within the nocturnal boundary layer. It is characterized by a maximum in wind speed at an altitude of a few hundred meters above the ground. This phenomenon results from the decoupling of the air flow from surface friction as the nocturnal inversion forms.
This wind speed maximum occurs just above the nocturnal inversion at night. It is typically found in the south central United States during the late spring and summer months. It is important in the development of Mesoscale Convective Complexes (MCC) or Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCS).
