Nocturnal cooling
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007559
The process by which the Earth's surface and the air directly above it lose heat to space through longwave radiation during the night. Without incoming solar radiation, the ground cools, which in turn cools the adjacent air, leading to a decrease in temperature. This phenomenon is responsible for the formation of dew, frost, and temperature inversions near the surface.
