Radiative cooling

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008306

The process by which a surface or atmospheric layer loses heat by emitting longwave infrared radiation into space or to cooler surrounding areas. This process is particularly effective on clear nights, leading to temperature drops and the formation of ground fog or frost. It is a primary mechanism for heat loss from Earth's surface.
