Ground fog
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001197
A type of fog that forms when the air near the ground cools to its dew point, causing water vapor to condense into tiny droplets. This cooling often occurs on clear, calm nights as the ground radiates heat away, chilling the overlying air. Ground fog is characterized by its shallow vertical extent, rarely exceeding a few meters in depth.
(abbrev. GF) Fog produced over the land by the cooling of the lower atmosphere as it comes in contact with the ground. Also known as radiation fog, and in
parts of California as tule fog.
