Polar night jet stream
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008029
A strong, circumpolar westerly wind current that forms in the stratosphere and lower mesosphere over the polar regions during the winter months. It develops due to the extreme temperature gradient between the perpetually dark polar night and the sunlit mid-latitudes. The strength and stability of this jet stream are closely linked to the formation and persistence of the polar vortex.
