Jet stream core

The central region of a jet stream containing the highest wind velocities. This core is defined by a specific isotach, or line of equal wind speed, that encloses the area of maximum flow. The wind speed within the core of a polar or subtropical jet stream must exceed 50 knots, but it can surpass 200 knots in extreme cases.
