Polar mesospheric summer echoes

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008028

An atmospheric phenomenon observed by radar in the mesosphere during summer months at high latitudes. These echoes are caused by strong scattering from small-scale irregularities in electron density, which are thought to be related to the presence of ice particles. They typically occur at altitudes between 80 and 90 kilometers and are a key indicator of mesospheric conditions.
