Polar low

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008025

An intense, small-scale cyclonic weather system that forms over maritime areas in polar or arctic air masses. These systems develop rapidly when cold, polar air moves over relatively warmer open water, fueled by strong heat and moisture fluxes from the sea surface. With diameters of 100 to 500 kilometers, they are much smaller than typical mid-latitude cyclones.
