Arctic sea smoke
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000185
A type of steam fog that forms when very cold arctic air moves over relatively warmer open water, such as leads in sea ice or unfrozen ocean surfaces. The rapid evaporation from the warmer water into the cold, dry air quickly saturates the air, leading to condensation. This phenomenon is common in polar regions and can significantly reduce visibility.
Steam fog, but often specifically applied to steam fog rising from small open water within sea ice.
