Antarctic sea smoke
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003546
A type of steam fog that forms over extremely cold open water in the Antarctic region when very cold, dry air moves over relatively warmer ocean surfaces. The rapid evaporation of water from the warmer surface into the cold air, followed by condensation, creates a visible layer of fog. This phenomenon is common in polynyas and leads in sea ice.
