Antarctic Surface Water

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010376

The cold, relatively fresh layer of water found at the surface of the Southern Ocean, particularly south of the Antarctic Polar Front. It forms through the melting of sea ice and precipitation, and its properties are influenced by atmospheric conditions over Antarctica. This water mass is a precursor to Antarctic Bottom Water, which forms through deep convection and sinks to the ocean floor.
