Antarctic front

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003541

A circumpolar boundary zone within the Southern Ocean that separates the cold, fresh Antarctic Surface Water to the south from the warmer, more saline Subantarctic Surface Water to the north. This front is a component of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current system and is defined by a sharp horizontal temperature and salinity gradient. Its position fluctuates seasonally and is a key indicator of oceanographic conditions in the region.
