Antarctic Intermediate Water

A distinct water mass formed in the Southern Ocean, characterized by relatively low salinity and temperature, which sinks and spreads northward at intermediate depths in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. It is formed by the mixing of Antarctic Surface Water and Subantarctic Mode Water. This water mass typically occupies depths between 600 and 1500 meters.
