Red Sea Water

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008462

A warm, highly saline water mass formed in the Red Sea by strong evaporation and little freshwater input. It leaves through the Strait of Bab-el-Mandeb as a dense outflow beneath the inflowing surface water, then sinks in the Gulf of Aden to its neutral density level. There it spreads at intermediate depths of several hundred meters through the Arabian Sea and western Indian Ocean as a salinity maximum.
