Gibraltar outflow water

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005967

A mass of warm, highly saline water that flows from the Mediterranean Sea into the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar. This dense water, known as Mediterranean Outflow Water (MOW), exits the strait and sinks along the continental slope of the Iberian Peninsula, spreading westward at an intermediate depth of about 1000 meters. Its distinct temperature and salinity signature makes it traceable for thousands of kilometers into the North Atlantic, influencing ocean circulation.
