A unit of frequency equal to one billion (10^9) cycles per second. In meteorology, it describes the frequency of electromagnetic waves used in radar systems and satellite communication. Weather radar systems, for instance, operate in the S-band (2-4 GHz) or C-band (4-8 GHz) to detect precipitation.
